With his signature works recognised far and wide, the much-collected and admired contemporary fine artist, Mackenzie Thorpe is identifiable in the modern art business, not least thanks to his ever expanding – and some might say, eccentric – subject matter preferences; which have routinely included humorous square sheep, naïve big-headed people and his dark industrial scenes. Born and bred in Middlesbrough in the 1950s, Thorpe was first employed in the shipyards native to the (then) heavily industrialised area, before taking the significant punt on forging an alternative, more creative career path. With stints at art school both there and later, in London, Thorpe eventually settled in North Yorkshire where he set-up an artistic supply shop and his own studio; from which his own professional publishing career blossomed in the fullness of time. Fast forward over two decades and this Autumn 2016 the ever in-demand Thorpe launch his very latest giclee mounted limited edition collection, with this particular piece – entitled ‘You’re my Rock’ – taking centre stage. Featuring one of his iconic faceless, heart-clutching characters, the narratives are there for all to interpret, providing prospective buyers move fast. With just 295 editions up for grabs, business will doubtless be brisk once again.
