Sam Toft

Born in the UK in 1964, Sam Toft graduated from Kingston Polytechnic with a BA in Applied Social Science after which she had many ‘interesting’ jobs including selling fire extinguishers, silver service waitressing and a death grants advisor to name but a few, before deciding a change was needed, and needed quick!

Sam then decided to move to Liverpool and study General Art and Design at the Community College there, where she was given the confidence by one of her tutors to give it a go with her pictures! She made many handmade cards, created illustrations, produced caricatures and made wedding invites.

Having moved many times Sam has now made Brighton and Hove her home. The now famous Mr Mustard was created there whilst ‘dawdling along the seafront’ she happily admits. Her wonderful characters and all her wonderfully humorous works of art are born from her wondrous imagination, her love of pretty much everything… stripes, textures, delicious whiffs, children’s rhymes, local people, lovely hats, nostalgic tunes, beautiful cats and dogs… etc etc!

Sam has perfected her own individual style over many years and has found that her favourite medium is oil pastel, which she applies very quickly, then contrastingly very carefully, adds ink on top which dries opaque, then she scrapes it off to give various textures in her own unmistakable quirky way.

With work exhibited in lovely galleries, also at art fairs and selling extremely well in the UK as well as in America, Sam respectfully advises you ‘if you like her work at all, to buy one of her masterpieces sooner rather than later, as if she gets any more famous you won’t be able to afford one!’
